The CIC is present at the largest event on protected areas, the IUCN World Parks Congress, which kicked off on the 12th November in Sydney, Australia. “Protected areas are about conservation and not solely protection; and conservation includes sustainable use of nature. That is the message we bring to the World Parks Congress”, said Bernard Lozé, President of the CIC.
The first field trip that the CIC has organized during the World Parks Congress 2014 of the IUCN in Sydney took place on the pre-congress day of the World Parks Congress, the 11th November in the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. More than 30 participants from all over the world were taken on a tour by two local Aboriginal guides and received an insight into how indigenous peoples have used and sustainably managed wild resources and wildlife as part of their culture and livelihood strategies for many thousand years.
Participants were taken through the stunningly beautiful Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, located about 1 hour north of Sydney, with its spectacular bays and headlands, and have learned about bush foods, medicines, traditional styles of art and the cultural significance of the areas that were visited. The tour ended with a tasting of traditional „bush tucker“ with dishes including barbequed kangaroo, fish and emu, and fresh made damper.
We will report more on further CIC-organised side events during this important world forum of national parks, held every 10 years.
