The world’s single largest gathering of organisations and individuals dedicated to the conservation of nature, the World Conservation Congress (WCC) of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is taking place in Honolulu, Hawai’i from 1 to 10 September this year. The International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC) is a proud member of IUCN and is of course represented at this WCC.

The mission of IUCN is to „Influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable.” There are currently over 1,300 IUCN members, including non-government organisations, states and government agencies, academic institutions and business associations. Over 16,000 scientists and experts network, share knowledge, experience, and positively influence the conservation of nature in various panels and commissions.

Although the WCC only runs for 10 days, the CIC has put an enormous amount of preparation into this event in order to ensure that its influence is positive and maximised on conservation through sustainable use. There are 99 motions to be decided on, and the CIC contributed to the debate surrounding several of these. Electronic voting has already taken place on most motions, however some motions as well as the elections for the IUCN Council will be voted on in Hawai’i. The CIC approached organisations, which are not able to send a delegation to the Congress encouraging them to give their proxy vote to the CIC. The CIC contacted the 46 candidates standing for election to the IUCN Council to determine whether they support sustainable use and sustainable hunting as important conservation strategies. Based on the responses as well as recommendations from partner organisations, a voting recommendation guide was prepared and circulated.

The CIC wholeheartedly believes in and supports the sustainable use principles that are at the core of IUCN’s mandate and the organisation will use all its influence and lobbying power to ensure they are upheld.” – says George Aman, President of the CIC.
