The CIC at CITES CoP17: Kick-off with a high-level ministerial meeting

The 17th Conference of the Parties (CoP) of The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is about to take place at the Sandton Convention Centre, in Johannesburg, South Africa from 24 September to 5 October this year.

On the day before the official opening of the CoP17, the Ministry of Water and Environmental Affairs of the Republic of South Africa is hosting a Ministerial Lekgotla to elaborate on the Nexus between the Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and CITES. The aim of the meeting is to discuss the role of CITES in advancing the achievement of Agenda 2030 and the sustainable development goals and to make sure that CITES Parties consider this role during deliberations at the 17th CoP to CITES.

The CIC has been invited to join the dialogue as an Intergovernmental Observer and is represented by the CIC Director General, Tamás Marghescu, and CIC member, Wilfried Pabst.
