The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act (RAWA) has passed through the United States House of Representatives, a move which will help secure around $1.4 billion in funding for nearly 12,000 at-risk species.

RAWA was part of a larger bill, the Moving Forward Act (H.R. 2), which went through the House on 30 June, 2020. The passage of RAWA out of the House represents the most significant investment in state and tribal fish and wildlife conservation in the last two decades.

The Congressional Sportsmen’s Federation (CSF) played a significant part in the proceedings, with RAWA first introduced to this Congress by Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus (CSC) Vice-Chair Representative Debbie Dingell and CSC member Representative Jeff Fortenberry. CSF were also instrumental in securing the inclusion of RAWA as part of the Moving Forward Act.

Should RAWA be accepted by the Senate, and later signed into law, this would secure $1.4 billion in funding for a period of 5 years, which would be used for recreational infrastructure, restoration of natural resources and investment in projects.

Specifically, the funds will strengthen the capacity of state fish and wildlife agencies to conduct proactive conservation efforts by providing financial assistance to fully implement their Congressionally mandated State Wildlife Action Plans.
