The CIC is saddened by the death of Sardar Naseer Tareen, who passed away on June 24, 2020. Globally recognised for his work on markhor in Pakistan, he will be remembered by the sustainable use community, and beyond, for his significant contributions to wildlife conservation.

As the visionary behind the now world renowned Torghar Conservation Project, he played a key role in revitalising Afghan urial and Suleiman markhor in the Torghar region of Pakistan.

Prior to his involvement, population numbers of these species were on the decline in the region. The introduction of regulated, sustainable hunting of urial and markhor was used as a measure to counter poaching, restore habitats, and is what facilitated dramatic recoveries of populations for both species.

In addition, local communities were integrated as part the project, allowing them to play a key role in the operations. This has brought in millions of dollars to these communities since the project’s inception.

Sardar Naseer Tareen’s work also inspired the CIC to create the Markhor Award, which is awarded to conservation projects that link the conservation of biodiversity and human livelihoods through sustainable use.

The Torghar Project was later given this award in 2010, which was presented to the recipients by Sardar Naseer Tareen himself, at the 10th Conference of Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD CoP10) in Nagoya, Japan.

The CIC commends these achievements and his contributions to sustainable use, and his work will continue to stand as a great example to empower future conservation work.
