It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Nikola T. Belev. The former President of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) died on 3 August, 2020 in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Respected among those in the world of veterinary science, as well as governmental institutions around world, he was considered a patriarch in his field.

The CIC came to experience his dedication and passion first hand, as he played an instrumental role in establishing the Agreement between OIE and the CIC during his term as President there. He attended and spoke at the St. Petersburg CIC General Assembly in 2011 – the same year that this Agreement was signed.

He also played a key role in strengthening the CIC’s presence in Bulgaria, even facilitating the state of Bulgaria joining the CIC Membership as a State Member.  In addition, he had a significant involvement in the establishment of the CIC Wildlife Health Centre in Pravets, Bulgaria.

The CIC team extends its condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Belev, and will remember him for his services to veterinary science, for his contributions to the CIC.
