Banning the import and export of hunting trophies is sometimes considered as a measure to help wildlife. This is a simplistic approach to a complex issue. The reality is that bans are often introduced without a full consideration of the wildlife science, the potential impact on livelihoods, and without any prior consultation with relevant stakeholders.

Due to this, restrictions on the movement of hunting trophies often achieve the opposite of the intended results, leading to negative consequences for wildlife and human well-being.
