The CIC are saddened to hear of the death of Zoltán Czirák, who passed away in his homeland of Hungary on 23 March, 2020.

Zoltán Czirák was an influential figure in forging collaborations between nature conservation and hunting in Hungary.

Up until his passing, he worked as a biodiversity expert and advisor in the Biodiversity and Gene Conservation Unit of the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture’s Nature Conservation Department, and was well known for being an open partner to all, even in difficult political discussions.

Among other things, he was instrumental in coordinating joint actions between the game management and nature conservation sectors in Hungary. Hunting seasons for small game and the import of certain trophies are just some of the activities that were achieved through his leadership.

In addition to this, he was also a respected figure in the international arena of conservation and sustainable use.

Since 1996, he worked on a number of international wildlife conventions, such as CITES, the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), The African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA), the Bern Convention, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and more. With some of these conventions, such as CITES and AEWA, he acted as a representative of Hungary itself through the Ministry of Agriculture.

The CIC team conveys its sincerest condolences to the friends and family of Mr. Czirák, who will not only be remembered for his achievements throughout his career, but also as an honest and reliable individual.
