Cooperation between farmers and hunters in Bavaria has led to the rescue of 90,000 fawns and other wildlife species on farms over the last year according to a new survey by the Bavarian Hunting Association (BJV).

This fantastic news comes as a result of measures used to detect and scare off animals prior to the mowing of tall grass on farms.

Historically, hunters have played a key role in supporting farmers in this way as part of their duty as custodians of wildlife and hunting ground managers.

In Bavaria today, hunters and farmers have been employing new methods that have drastically improved efforts to rescue animals on farms.

Drones with thermal imaging cameras are being used to detect and remove animals prior to the mowing of grass – this video by BJV demonstrates this practice in action. Scarecrows with acoustic and visual signals are also being deployed to scare off wildlife in an equally effective fashion.

The adoption of these new techniques by hunters is an example of just some of the work that hunters are doing to protect biodiversity.

The CIC congratulates the hunters and farmers in Bavaria for finding new ways to protect wildlife. We would encourage further cooperation between hunters and farmers, as well as those from other disciplines, in order to combine efforts to conserve wildlife and rural spaces.
