Professor Ryszard Dzięciołowski (89 years old) passed away on 24th April 2020 in Warsaw, Poland. In the period 1970-2000, he held the position of Vice President twice and was President of the CIC Big Game Commission for three different terms. He was also the representative for Poland as a CIC State Member for many years.

Born in Wejherowo in northern Poland, on the coast of the Baltic Sea in 1931, he studied at the University of Life Sciences at Poznań and Warsaw. After his studies, he worked as a researcher at the Forest Research Institute in Warsaw from 1959 to 1981. In 1981 he went to Nigeria, where he stayed until 1985. In Nigeria, he was the Director of the Rivers Institute of Agricultural Research and Training in Port Harcourt.

The period 1986-1987 he spent as a senior research fellow at the Forest Research Institute in Christchurch, New Zealand. In 1988 he came back to Poland, where he was the Head of the Department of Forest Zoology and Wildlife Management at Warsaw University of Life Sciences, until his retirement in 2001.

For a long time, he was one of the two representatives of Poland at European Federation for Hunting and Conservation (FACE) and since 1990, until his death, he was a member of the editorial board of Łowiec Polski, the premier Polish hunting magazine.

He has authored 80 scientific papers and hundreds of popular articles. He wrote 14 books, including monographs on moose, fallow deer and European beaver.

He is considered one of the most important European experts of Ungulates of his generation.
