The Russian Association of Hunters and Fishermen (Rosohotrybolovsoyuz) has joined as a co-signatory of the joint statement on captive bred lion shooting already signed by the CIC, Dallas Safari Club (DSC), Rowland Ward Ltd., the International Professional Hunters’ Association (IPHA), the African Operators’ and Professional Hunters’ Associations of Africa (OPHAA) and the African Professional Hunters Association (APHA).

The statement, originally jointly published by the CIC and DSC in November, 2020, was positively received throughout the world of conservation and sustainable use.

It made clear that while the practise is often mistakenly referred to as “canned lion hunting” or “captive bred lion hunting,” it is not representative of responsible, sustainable, fair chase hunting.

Now, with the addition of the Russian Association of Hunters and Fishermen, this message will also be shared with hunters all across the Russian Federation.

The President of the Russian Association of Hunters and Fishermen, Tatiana Aramileva , said the following on captive bred lion shooting in a letter to the CIC Headquarters:

“Whatever terminology is used, and whether it is legal or not, hunting a lion grown in captivity (cage) does not meet the definition of responsible, sustainable, fair chase hunting and damages the reputation of hunters.”

The CIC would like to thank the Russian Association of Hunters and Fishermen for recognising the importance of this issue, and for supporting our stance on this practice.
